NEW YORK – Feb.  21, 2024 – THE CITY, an independent nonprofit newsroom dedicated to serving the people of New York, announced today its partnership with Open Campus to cover higher education in New York City as part of the Open Campus Local Network expansion.

As part of this collaboration, THE CITY will focus on covering the 25-campus City University of New York (CUNY) system. CITY reporters Haidee Chu, who covers Queens, and Jonathan Custodio, who covers the Bronx, will lead the charge, delving into stories about CUNY and offering insights into the university system and its impact on neighboring communities.

Under the collaboration, Open Campus provides editorial guidance and training, and cross publishes THE CITY’s stories.

Open Campus is a national nonprofit news organization founded in 2019, with a focus on higher education reporting and fostering collaboration between national and local newsrooms. THE CITY’s participation in the Open Campus Local Network expands the network to a total of 12 newsrooms and 15 reporters across the country.

This partnership underscores THE CITY’s commitment to delivering in-depth reporting on critical issues that matter to New Yorkers, while strengthening their access to information that helps them navigate the city.

Partner newsrooms include, WUNC, a public radio station in North Carolina; El Paso Matters, a nonprofit news organization in Texas, and CalMatters, a nonprofit newsroom covering politics and policy in California.
